"Look back to verse 1. Here we read, “Then some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,..” The big guns have now arrived. It may be that the local Pharisees and scribes sent a message to Jerusalem to get the more learned of the leaders to come and discredit Jesus. Whatever the case, they did not hesitate to quickly point out what they perceived to be wrong.
Keep in mind that they came not with the intent of really listening to what the Lord Jesus had to say, but to discredit Him. It is about the time of the Passover, and this will be the third passover that the Lord Jesus will keep. He will only keep one more before His crucifixion. The popularity of the Lord Jesus had reached its peak, and the religious leadership had determined to be rid of the Lord Jesus."
