"In verse 13, as we noted last week, the Lord Jesus received the news of John's death, and with the disciples, withdrew to a desolate place. The idea is that it was a place where there were not a lot of distractions. It was a sparsely populated area. The disciples needed to tell the Lord about their missionary endeavors. The Lord would obviously update the disciples on what He had been doing. Overall this was the processing of John the Baptist's death.
Sometimes, a place without noise, crowds, and distraction of various sorts is needed. On this occasion, even though the Lord had withdrawn to this desolate place, there was no immediate rest. In verse 13 we are told, “... and when the crowds heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities.” As we might say, there is no rest for the weary."
