"If we think about the situation, the waves were being moved by the windstorm. Wind pushes the water, and on this night, the wind was strong, and thus the waves were mounting and rough. The disciples had been unable to get to the other side. They were two to three miles out onto the Lake, and still had several miles to go. They had been wrestling with the wind and the waves all night. In the midst of this, they see what they think is a ghost coming towards them walking on the water. They cry out in fear.
The night is difficult, the danger and the stress and exhaustion are overwhelming, and now there is an apparition coming towards them from out of the darkness. They are terrified of what they are seeing.
As we know, the Lord Jesus speaks to them and tells them that they are not seeing a ghost. The Lord said that “it is I”, meaning, “I Am” is now present. The maker of the winds, and the water, is coming to them walking on His creation of water as if it is solid ground. The terror goes away. The wind has not stopped, and the waves still rise and fall, but the terror has now gone away.
You know, when you and I take a moment to remember that our Lord is with us in the deepest and darkest night, the terror will flee away. There is no life terror that can stand in the presence of the One who controls every moment of life."
