"Matthew, when writing his Gospel, had the blessing of hindsight, whereas, as they were experiencing the events, they did not know how far the fame of the Lord spread. They have now journeyed into Syria, and they come across a woman whose faith is still testified to this day.
The more I study this event, the more profound it becomes in my mind. The Lord has left the borders of Israel and gone into the region of the gentiles. What we find is the truth that God has a people that He will not leave outside His saving love. I think about what John the Beloved recorded for us in John chapter 4 when I read this event in Matthew 15. In John chapter 4, John tells us that Jesus needed to travel through Samaria. The reason? There was a woman who needed the Savior. There was a soul whom God had prepared, to receive the message of the Messiah."
