"Why is it that the people followed the Lord to a desolate place, not considering the necessities, for the most part, that they would need for a day in a desolate place? There are two sides to this coin, and then there is the coin Maker. The disciples are on one side of the coin. The Lord, as verse 6 tells us, was testing Philip and, I dare say, ultimately all the disciples. The disciples thought they knew who they were following. They thought they understood that they were following the Savior of Israel, and the One who would restore the kingdom. However, by their actions and their communication, they still did not fully understand who it was that was in their presence."
